We are a peace with justice program. Our mission is to facilitate the relationship between individuals, their faith, and the community, in order to embody the mandate from the Book of Micah to "do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God." Our current programmatic priorities are: 1) Promoting peace in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other areas in conflict; 2) Advocating for economic justice locally and globally; 3) Strengthening the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community and promoting marriage equality; 4) Advocating and promoting equitable national health care for all residents of the United States; 5) Providing sanctuary to military personnel who wish to discern their call in regard to serving in areas in conflict; and 6) Supporting economic justice for workers and promoting dignity in the workplace.
In 2008 the Micah Project:
Guided the renewal of the Resolution of Sanctuary for First United Methodist Church of Tacoma.
Worked with Worship Arts, the Growth Team, and the Pacific Northwest Reconciling Ministries Network to provide the first annual "Out Before God" service celebrating the sacred worth of all people.
Dedicated the Peace Pole outside of the First Church office facility.
Initiated the "National Guarantee Your Vote Day" in which over 5,000,000 emails went out.
Participation by 102 congregations, 11 denominations, and 116 organizations.
Seated a panelist on the roundtable forum for the National Coalition Against Torture.
Ongoing: Providing speakers at the potluck following Taizé gatherings, general policy advocacy, providing teachers and speakers for adult Sunday school classes, networking with other peace and justice organizations, providing consultation to other congregations and denominations about the Micah Project and possible similar "startups."
